In 2012, Giuseppe Benanti handed over to his twin sons, Salvino and Antonio, the winery – Benanti. The brothers immediately and efficiently got to work. Their goal? A “brutal refocusing” of the vineyards and the cellars to only produce the best of what the region has to offer. Today, there is no doubt that they are among the best in what the country has to offer. Since we opened Flight, we have been working to offer their wines, and we now pleased to have them available in DC.
On Friday, meet Salvino and taste four of his delicious wines. Food pairings will be available. This is not a ticketed event - simply make reservations here. Email Info@FlightDC.com with any questions. Final menu to be posted Tuesday evening.
Tentative Menu: Flight of three wines
2016 Etna Bianco (100% Carricante)
From indigenous Carricante grapes grown on Mount Etna – an active volcano – at nearly 3000 feet above sea level. Notes of lemongrass, Asian pears, honeydew melon, and crushed smoky volcanic minerals. The wine finishes clean and zesty with hints of cinnamon, bay leaf, bitter orange peel, and smoke.
2015 Etna Rosso (80% Nerello Mascalese + 20% Nerello Cappuccio)
Sourced from 3 different sides of the volcanic slopes, the fruit is from different parcels that range in elevation from 1400 to 3000 feet above sea level. Aromas of wild berry, anise, and crushed stone; floral finish with a touch of vanilla and polished tannins.
2015 Nerello Cappuccio (100% Nerello Cappuccio)
Nerello Cappuccio or Mantellato (mantled), is an indigenous variety of Etna. In the last few decades, it was continuously abandoned by the vine growers and almost risked extinction. This fruit comes from a vineyard which Benanti planted after extensive research of vine production and after a rigorous selection of the many vine varieties of Nerello Cappuccio on Etna. Aromas of red fruit with a touch of vanilla.
